Captain Vikram Batra was born on September 9, 1974, in the town of Palampur in Himachal Pradesh, India. He was the son of G.L. Batra and Kamal Kanta Batra and had a twin brother named Vishal. He completed his early education at Central School in Palampur and went on to pursue a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Punjab Engineering College in Chandigarh.
In 1996, Captain Vikram Batra was commissioned into the Indian Army’s 13th battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles. He was posted to Sopore in Kashmir and was later transferred to the Kargil sector in 1999. During the Kargil War, Captain Vikram Batra was given the task of recapturing Point 5140, which was occupied by Pakistani forces.
Captain Vikram Batra (Posthumous) commanded the Delta Company of the 13th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles during the Kargil War. The Jammu and Kashmir Rifles is a regiment of the Indian Army that primarily recruits from the Jammu and Kashmir region.

On June 19, 1999, Captain Vikram Batra and his Delta Company launched a daring attack on Point 5140. During the course of the battle, he famously exclaimed, “Yeh Dil Maange More!” (“This heart asks for more!”), which became a popular slogan in India.
However, during a subsequent operation to recapture another enemy position, Captain Vikram Batra was hit by enemy fire and was martyred on July 7, 1999. He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military honor, for his bravery and sacrifice.
Captain Vikram Batra’s legacy has continued to inspire generations of Indians, and he is remembered as a hero who embodied the values of courage, bravery, and selflessness. His family has also continued to honor his memory, and a memorial to Captain Vikram Batra was built in his hometown of Palampur. Captain Vikram Batra’s wife, Dimple Cheema, also wrote a book about their relationship titled “The Unforgettable Love Story”.

Captain Vikram Batra (Posthumous) received the Param Vir Chakra, which is India’s highest military decoration, for his actions during the Kargil War. The Param Vir Chakra is awarded for acts of valor in the face of the enemy and is considered to be one of the most prestigious awards in India.
