On 14 November 1987, the 14-year-old Tendulkar was selected to represent Bombay in the Ranji Trophy. It was India’s premier domestic first-class cricket tournament for the 1987–88 season. He was not selected for the final eleven in any matches.

 

Tendulkar did not play any matches in the 1988–89 season. But he did make his second appearance in the following season. Then he was selected to play for a combined Bombay and Maharashtra team against the touring Zimbabweans. In the match, he took two wickets of Zimbabwean batsmen Eddo Brandes and Dave Houghton.
