Ushu Forest In Kalam Valley, Pakistan

 

Ushu forest is a Jewel of Kalam valley. It is just neighboring the Kalam Bazar. That shows the importance of this area. In the Kalam region, there is no such forest in the middle of the city. Therefore, it is called the Ushu forest. The forest dwellers are Wali, Ghalai, and other tribes. During the British period, this forest was known as the “Contai jungle”. But after the creation of Pakistan, its name has been changed to Ushu forests.

This forest is full of several medicinal plants. It is also home to many species of flowers and animals. Most of these animals are rare in nature and are found in the northern part of Pakistan. This forest is also home to a wide variety of birds. During seasons such as spring and summer, the forest is filled with the beautiful songs of these birds, making it a very peaceful place to visit.

Kalam is situated in a valley on the western border of Chitral in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan.  Kalam and the surrounding area are a picturesque tourist destination that is still relatively unknown. The word Kalam literally means an ‘ocean’ or an “unending expanse of water” and with its beautiful scenery, this is a perfect description for this region. The Kalam Valley is located on the western end of the Grand Trunk Road, which runs from Bhera, Punjab in Pakistan to Peshawar, Khyber Pak

 

 

Why Ushu forest is famous

About a 10 hours bus drive from Islamabad, in Gilgit-Baltistan, lies the famous lake of Mahodand. The lake of Mahodand is formed by a glacier, and the glacier is known as Ushu. When the lake freezes up in winter, the glacier Ushu blocks the only route to the lake. The lake is only opened again in summers when the snow melts and the government workers clear the path. The surrounding area is considered one of the most interesting and most beautiful places for hiking.

Ushu forest is famous for its huge glaciers, thick forests, and sky-high mountain peaks. People from all over the world visit this beautiful forest every year.

 

 

Ushu – forest of Deodar trees

Deodar Forests are found naturally in the Ushu forest. Deodar is an evergreen coniferous tree that is native to the Himalayas.  It is known by a variety of names in different languages: Devadaru in Hindi, Devara in Sinhala, Devadaru in Telugu, Devara in Kannada, Devara in Sanskrit, etc.

Usho – Mohodand Lake

Mahodand lake is a famous lake located in the upper Usho Valley at about 35 km away from Kalam. The lake offers a variety of activities like fishing and boating. The Mahodand Lake is accessible by a 4-wheel-drive vehicle, one must enter a 4-wheel-drive vehicle to reach the Mahodand Lake. The Mahodand Lake is located at an altitude of approximately 4,350 meters. Mahodand Lake is in the Mahodand Valley, which is surrounded by the high Himalayas on all sides.

 

 

Usho – Gabral hill

An amazing hill station to visit and explore right in the heart of the valley of Usho. The best time to visit Gabral is in the summer months of May and June when the weather is cool, and the grass is lush green. The best time to see the snow-capped mountains is from July to September.

It is famous for its brown trout (fish), thick lush green forests, musical springs, home to the highest snow-capped peaks, and beautiful lakes. The town is also known for its historical significance and is populated by the Gabral sub-tribe of the Kalash people.
